Launch of New Inventors & Entrepreneurs Club of Nassau County - |
| |
Nassau creates inventors club by John Callegari Published: January 19th, 2012 Brian Fried The head of the Suffolk County Inventors and Entrepreneurs Club is taking his forum to Nassau County. Serial inventor Brian Fried approached Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano last year about setting up a similar forum to those held monthly in Suffolk. Mangano agreed and began working with Fried on how best to implement the club that allows would-be inventors to come in, share their ideas and get advice on bringing concepts to market. “Creating an environment where our residents can turn their ideas into action while creating jobs and economic impact is the cornerstone of our economic development program,” Mangano said. “Nassau County has a proud history of innovation from aviation to defense to molecular biology; Nassau County has always been at the forefront.” The club has scheduled monthly meetings in the ceremonial chambers of the Theodore Roosevelt County Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola. The first meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 31. The Nassau County Industrial Development Agency will have a representative at each meeting to discuss the benefits and incentives available to businesses through the IDA. In addition, patent lawyers will likely attend some of the meetings to answer legal questions. Monthly guest speakers will also attend the forums to give expert advice. Fried, who has led the Suffolk Inventors Club for several years, will serve as moderator of the club. In addition to creating his own marketable inventions, Fried also hosts an Internet radio program devoted to inventing. Potential inventors have traveled from as far as Westchester County to go to the Suffolk Inventors Club meetings in Hauppauge in the past, which gave Fried the idea for taking the forum west.

Inventors Club News - FYI |
| |
New products unveiled at Suffolk County Inventors Clubby John Callegari An adjustable golf strap that fixes your swing. A device that opens tiny jewelry clasps. A storage area for trash cans that isn't an eyesore. No, these aren't the next "As Seen on TV" products made by the people that brought you the Snuggie. They aren't marketed by Vince the Slap Chop guy either. These are the latest innovations by Suffolk County inventors hoping to come up with the next must-have item. And they all came together Tuesday night for the third anniversary meeting of the Suffolk County Inventors and Entrepreneurs Club, which aptly took place during National Inventors Month. Close to 75 hopeful inventors arrived at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge to get information, share stories and learn how to turn an idea jotted down on a napkin into a successful, marketable product. The club's founder, Brian Fried, is no stranger to successful inventions as he supports his family with concepts he dreams up. Fried is the mind behind several products, including pull ties, an alternative to clips and twist ties for bagged goods, and a commercial success on the QVC shopping network. "People don't feel comfortable sharing their ideas," Fried said. "They're so secretive because they're afraid somebody may take their invention. The truth is, though, that it's so much better having someone who's familiar with the process give you ideas and advice." Fried isn't the only one taking an all-or-nothing approach to innovation. According to his estimations, 10 percent of the club's roughly 600 members are attempting to make a living solely off of their ideas. One such individual, Terry Morris of Wheatley Heights, left her job as an employee relations manager to create and market her own inventions. "My husband had just retired and I thought, let me take this risk," Morris said. "I was up until 2 a.m. those first few nights just debating whether I should take the plunge." But dive she did, and in 2007, she successfully created Ayleet Enterprises, marketing her line of hygiene products, which includes the exfoliating washcloth and the ultimate sport towel. It wasn't all glory for her however. There were several low times along the way when Morris really found value in Fried's inventors club. "Rejection hurts a lot," Morris said. "Leaving a job with a good salary really makes you go back and forth in your head about whether you made the right decision pursuing this dream. The close-knit family at the Suffolk County Inventors Club makes you realize you're not alone and that rejection is just part of the journey in this field. Hearing everyone else's story makes you realize that nobody just wakes up and earns $1 million in a day." Using the club's connections, Morris said Ayleet's business has been picking up, and she and her husband are able to pay their bills off the profits. In fact, her exfoliating washcloth has been featured in over a half-dozen catalogues. If Morris keeps at it, she could some day achieve the level of success fellow club member Joseph Balcuk has attained. As a former mathematician and teacher from Moriches, Balcuk came to the realization that there was no incentive for kids to want to learn, so he decided to come up with a better way than textbooks and essays. Recognizing the impact that video games had on children and the potential for learning associated with them, Balcuk created the Merbs, an interactive, online civilization that students can grow through an incentive system set up by their teachers. With the Merbs as his flagship invention, Balcuk created his company, Precision Mathematics, in 2006, and has slowly grown the business during the past four years. "I've found that the best way to be successful is by basically knocking on doors," Balcuk said. "I spend eight weeks on the road each year attending trade shows across the country selling my product, but it's worked because the Merbs is currently in anywhere from 100 to 200 schools in the U.S. and Canada. We even have plans to take it global soon." Of course, marketing is easier for some than for others. One of the real crowd-pleasers at the inventor's club meeting, a spring- loaded chair that helps physically challenged people such as the elderly get out of their seats, lacks financial backing of any kind. Created by engineers Henry Dela Rosa and Majid Zarinfar, the lightweight lift chair is in its final development stages, but cannot be manufactured without some financial investment. That lack of funds led Dela Rosa and Zarinfar to Fried's club, which along with inventors, was attended by patent lawyers and entrepreneurs looking for the next big thing - perhaps even the engineers' lift chair. "That's what the Suffolk Inventors Club is all about," Fried said, "making connections and getting inventors in touch with people who truly want to help them grow their ideas into something profitable."
